Measurement campaign design

Design and review of met-mast and ground-station measurement campaigns.

Overview

Measurement campaign design

We design or review measurement campaigns so the data is bankable.

Sensor selection, siting and uncertainty are addressed.

Measurement campaign design
What it covers

Scope in detail

Sensor selection

Sensor selection

We specify measurement instruments and their required accuracy class to the relevant standard — IEC 61724 for solar irradiance, IEC 61400-12 principles for wind — so the campaign produces data of a quality that will actually be accepted by lenders and their technical advisors later. Instrument selection is matched to the project stage: a screening campaign has different requirements than a bankable-grade measurement programme.

Siting

Siting

Mast and measurement station siting is planned to avoid obstructions, shading and terrain effects that would bias the recorded data relative to what the actual turbines or panels will experience, following the standoff distances the relevant standard recommends for the terrain and obstacle types present. Siting decisions are documented with the reasoning, so a later reviewer can assess whether the location was genuinely representative.

Uncertainty

Uncertainty

We quantify measurement uncertainty arising from instrument accuracy, calibration drift, siting effects and data completeness, since this uncertainty carries through directly into the resource assessment and yield uncertainty bands used for financing. Campaigns with known weaknesses — short duration, gaps, uncalibrated sensors — are flagged with the specific uncertainty penalty that results, not glossed over.

Review

Review

We conduct quality assurance review of the measurement campaign data on an ongoing basis, not just at the end, catching sensor drift, data logger faults or siting problems while there's still time to correct them rather than discovering a compromised dataset after the campaign has finished. QA findings are reported back to the client promptly so corrective action isn't delayed.
