Risk & schedule assessment

Structured assessment of technical, cost and schedule risk with mitigations.

Overview

Risk & schedule assessment

We build a structured risk assessment across technical, cost and schedule dimensions.

Each risk is rated with practical mitigations.

Risk & schedule assessment
In detail

What this involves

Every project carries technical, cost and schedule risk; the difference between a well-run project and a troubled one is whether those risks are understood and managed early. NEWATT builds a structured risk assessment that makes the project's real exposure visible.

Working from the design, contracts and programme, we identify the credible technical, cost and schedule risks, rate each for likelihood and impact, and test whether the schedule is realistic against the scope and procurement lead times. The assessment is specific to the project, not a generic checklist.

The deliverable is a prioritised risk register with practical, owner-focused mitigations for the risks that matter most, plus a view on the realism of the programme and the key milestones. It gives the financing parties an early-warning framework they can track through delivery rather than discovering problems at handover.

What it covers

Scope in detail

Risk rating

Risk rating

Identified risks are rated for likelihood and impact using a consistent scale across the whole review, so the client can compare a technical risk against a schedule risk against a cost risk on the same basis rather than as separate, incomparable lists. Ratings are backed by the specific evidence behind them — a comparable project precedent, a calculation, a contract clause — so the client can see the reasoning, not just the score.

Schedule review

Schedule review

We assess whether the project programme is realistic against the scope of work, equipment lead times and the sequencing dependencies the design actually requires, comparing durations against benchmarks from comparable projects we've reviewed or delivered. Programmes that compress critical-path activities below what's achievable for the scope are flagged specifically, with the activity and the gap between programmed and realistic duration.

Cost risk

Cost risk

Cost risk exposure is assessed by checking the project cost estimate's contingency levels against the actual maturity of the design and procurement position — a budget-stage design carries materially more cost risk than one with firm vendor quotations, and contingency should reflect that. We flag cost estimates that appear to assume a level of price certainty the current design and procurement stage doesn't actually support.

Mitigations

Mitigations

For every material risk identified, we recommend a specific mitigating action — a design change, a contract amendment, an additional survey or study — rather than leaving the client with a list of risks and no path forward. Recommendations are prioritised by which risks are most consequential to the investment decision, so the client's limited time and budget for follow-up work goes to what matters most first.
